Kanha in Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest and best known national parks in India.
It was created in 1955 and today has a core zone of almost 1000km^2 surrounded by a buffer zone of another 1000km^2. In 1973 it became part of Project Tiger (started in India in 1972 as a conservation programme for tigers) and currently has a population of about 60 Bengal Tigers. Though for most visitors the tigers are the main attraction to the park there is much more to it. Richard Kippling allegedly had the lush forests and open grassland meadows of Kanha in mind when he wrote his famous Jungle Book.
