Purana Qila is the old fort which was built in mid-16th century by Sher Shah Suri (reign 1540-1545), the predecessor of the great Mughal emperor Humayun. It is located at the western end of Rajpath.
The walls of the fort are up to 18m high and 1,5km long. Today the main structures inside the fort are the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque and Sher Mandal. Emperor Humayun used the octagonal tower of Sher Mandal as
an observatory and library. Only one year after Humayun recaptured his empire from Sher Shah Suri's son he died at Sher Mandal on 24 January 1556 when he slipped and fell down the 2 stories of
the building.
Lodi Gardens is a park of almost 100 acres in the heart of New Delhi.
Inside the park there are several tombs from the 15th and 16th century.
Today it is a favorite spot for the people of Delhi for a morning or evening walk or picnic at weekends.
The garden area around the tombs was created in 1936. Before 1936 it was populated by two villages, whose residents were resettled in order to create space for the garden.
In 1192 the first ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, Qutb-ud-din Aibak, started construction of the 73m high minaret, which was finished by his son and later extended by other rulers. The remains of the mosque at it's base are from the same era.
The tower which is made of red sandstone and white marble, consists of five stories which can be reached via an internal staircase with 379 steps.
Today the Qutub complex is a World Heritage Site and one of the main tourist attractions in Delhi.
The inside of the tower is not open to the public since a disaster which happened in 1981 when more than 40 people came to death after a panic broke out on the staircase inside the tower.
