India 2016 (Odisha) - Bhitarkanika National Park

Bhitarkanika National Park

The Bhitarkanika National Park with an area of 145km^2 is the core of the 650km^2 Bhitarkanika Sanctuary. Located 130km north of Bhubaneshwar in the delta of the Brahmani river the park has a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Large areas consist of mangrove forests, the second largest ecosystem of that kind in india. The park has an impressive population of giant saltwater crocodiles, some specimens larger than 6m.

The best way to explore the park is to book a boat trip at its entrance. Part of the tour is a walking trip in the mangrove forest. Besides the crocodiles other animals abundant in the park are white spotted deer and wild boars and reptiles like king cobra, python and water lizard.

It is home to more than 250 species of birds, some of them migratory birds from Asia and Europe.
