India 2014 - Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort lies in the middle of the city of Jodhpur on a rocky hill about 120m above the city. It is one of the largest and most impressive forts of india.

Though the first parts of the fort were built by Rao Jodha around 1460, most of the today structure dates from the 17th century.

Inside the fort several distinctive wonderfully crafted palaces, like Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Sheesha Mahal (Mirror Palace) can be found, as well as some well stocked museums of howdahs, royal cradles, miniatures (paintings), armoury etc..

On the way up to the fort one has to pass through seven impressive gates,  each dating from a different era and each with a name to commemorate an important event in history, mostly these are victories in war. The walls are up to 36m high and in some places more than 20m wide.

Famous is the legend of "Raja Ram Meghwal", who was buried alive in the foundations of the fortress by Rao Jodha in order to ensure a propitious future of the fort and therefore the Rajput clan of Rathore. His family in return is looked after by the Rathores until today.
