India 2014 - Fatehpur Sikri

Location of Fatehpur Sikri and Agra

Fatehpur Sikri is a palace complex build by emperor Akba and the seat of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585. Akba founded the city of Fatehpur in 1569 and after the victory over Chittor moved his capital from Agra 37km SW to Fatehpur and again just 14 years later to Lahore.

Interesting to notice that water shortage in Fatehpur was one of the reasons it was abandoned 1585 just shortly after its construction - the same reason why the mighty fort of Chittorgarh had been defeated and finally abandoned too.

Due to the fact it was in constant use by different authorities until today the palace and especially the royal quarters can be visited as they were at Akbas time and are said to be the best preserved Mughal palace from that time.

The complex is completely made of local red sandstone - a striking contrast compared to the later building activities by Akba's grandson Shah Jahan, namely the Taj Mahal or the fort in Agra. The contrast is especially visible in Agra Fort where buildings from both eras stand next to each other.

Akba is said to have been most tolerant when religion is concerned. He was married to a Hindu wife, a Muslim and a Christian wife. Each of them had her own palace and household inside Fatehpur Sikri. The architecture of the complex is a blend of different indian and  persian styles.
