India 2012 - Tiruchirappalli

Vinayaka Temple

The town of Tiruchirappalli is situated almost in the centre of the state of Tamil Nadu and is a major railway and highway traffic junction. It's history dates back to the early times of the Chola dynasty 300 BCE.

Best-known landmarks of Tiruchirappalli are the Rockfort in the town centre and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple complex.

The Rockfort resides more than 80m above the city, the Vinayaka Temple, dedicated to Ganesha, at the top. In 16th and 17th century the ruling dynasty of the Nayak of Madurai expanded this place to a fort.

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple complex, which is dedicated to Vishnu, is said to be the largest temple in India. You have to pass through seven gopurams which are up to 73m high to reach the inner sanctum.
