Panaji, also known as Panjim, is the capital of the indian state of Goa. For more than 400 years Goa was a Portuguese province until 1961 when the province was annexed by India under heavy military pressure.

Until today the character of the city is more Portuguese than Indian.

Contributing to this is the planned grid layout of the city with many colonial style buidlings that still exist.  Some of these landmarks are the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the area of Fontainhas, also called Old Goa, with many historic buildings like the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Church of St Francis of Assisi and Se Cathedral to name just some of the prominent places of interest here.
